Why Australian breakdancer Raygun scored zero at Paris Olympics

The Olympic debut of breakdancing featured a surprising result: Australian competitor Raygun scored zero points. Additionally, Raygun’s performance was criticized by many viewers for the poor breakdancing at the Paris Olympics.

In a surprising outcome at the Paris Olympics, Sydney University lecturer Rachael Gunn, known as Raygun, failed to score any points in her three bouts during the breakdancing (breaking) event.

Gun’s breakdance performance in Paris Olympic

Previously, Gun’s breakdance performance was shared on social media and sparked debate on social media. A user, who goes by @a_txcllctr87033 , shared a video with caption:

“Raygun, I’m sure you’re a sweet lady, but man…”

The video of Raygun’s performance left viewers stunned.

In the footage, Raygun’s performance was marked by awkward movements.

The routine ended with a perplexing moment as she squirmed on the dance floor, hand on her chin. This awkward finale further contributed to the confusion about her performance.

Raygun then faced to criticism after challenging performance at Paris 2024 Olympics

Her performance received significant criticism from many users. However, despite this, some users praised Raygun for her bravery and resilience.

One person said: We were all watching the same thing no need to explain we understand…

A second wrote: she was a shocker and an embarrasment to our country.

While a third commented: I feel like Australia straight up said, “sure, we gotta break dancer”, then sent Jane from accounting.

Another added: Finally, someone to replace the hawk tuah girl

Raygun’s performance received a score of zero.

Raygun, 36, faced intense scrutiny following her performance.

Despite the effort and creativity she brought to the stage, she did not receive any votes from the judges.

The performance featured unique elements such as hopping like a kangaroo.

Additionally, she performed the sprinkler dance move, which was intended to reflect her Australian heritage.

Breaking judge MGbility provided insights into the scoring process.

According to MGbility, the comparative judging system used in breaking involves five criteria. Competitors are evaluated based on these criteria.

Although Raygun’s performance was original and representative of Australia, it did not reach the level of her competitors.

Judges’ perspective on Raygun’s performance

Judge MGbility expressed sympathy for Raygun, stating, “I feel personally very sorry. The breaking and hip hop community definitely stand behind her. She was just trying to bring something new, something original, and something that represents her country.”

She added: ‘Unfortunately for her, the other b-girls were better. That’s why she didn’t score any votes in her rounds.

‘Breaking is all about originality and bringing something new to the table from your country or region and this is exactly what Raygun was doing.

MGbility said that Raygun had indeed qualified for the Olympics through the Oceania qualifiers. Despite her innovative approach and the originality of her moves, the judges rated the other competitors higher.

Amidst the backlash, Raygun has maintained a positive outlook.

She shared an Instagram post featuring a motivational quote on her ‘Stories’ feed, courtesy of the World DanceSport Federation: “Don’t be afraid to be different, go out there and represent yourself, you never know where that’s gonna take you.”
